Ocean Census

Ocean Census is a global mission to accelerate the discovery of ocean life.

Our vast ocean is full of undiscovered life, where 75-90% of the estimated 1–2 million marine species remain undiscovered. A revolutionary, new approach to the discovery of ocean life is key to a sustainable future and combating the biodiversity crisis.

Inspired by vanguard programmes of the past and founded by Nekton and The Nippon Foundation, Ocean Census is rallying a global network of passionate ocean scientists to enhance ocean life discovery efforts worldwide through expeditions, science and awareness raising activity.

Alongside traditional taxonomy methods, Ocean Census is deploying the revolutionary potential of cutting-edge technologies and creating an accessible database that will help to support more equitable access to biodiversity knowledge. Ocean Census is made possible as a result of a growing Alliance working to achieve more by sharing knowledge and resources.
