Durham University Solar Car has been pushing boundaries of technology for two decades. Our solar cars are designed and built using research and practical expertise across the range of engineering disciplines.
“Durham’s latest solar car features a composite monocoque bodyshell with a weight one third of an F1 car and aerodynamic drag comparable to door mirrors of a conventional car, enabling highway driving using less than half the power of a kettle”. This car successfully crossed Australia in six days in 2023, driving 3020km through the outback. Here, solar cars are pushed to their limits where tough conditions become the ultimate testing grounds. While it did this using only the power of the sun, the energy consumed by the vehicle was approximately equivalent to the energy in one gallon of diesel fuel.
Through development of ultra-high efficiency electric vehicles, the team educates and inspires the engineers of the future.
