In 2023, Eden Geothermal became the UK's first operational deep geothermal energy plant in 37 years. Located at the Eden Project in Cornwall, it heats the site's enormous Biomes, offices and a state-of-the-art plant nursery and education centre, harnessing naturally occurring, sustainable energy from the granite deep underground.
The deep geothermal well was completed in 2021, with a vertical depth of 4.9km (just over 3 miles) and a measured length of 5.2km (nearly 3.3 miles) making it the longest well under UK soil.
Heat represents around 40% of the UK's energy consumption, equating to nearly a third of UK greenhouse gas emissions. Geothermal energy is a renewable and low-carbon heat source available throughout the UK. Once operational, it has minimal visual impact - with the smallest surface footprint of any energy source and no structures higher than 10m.
Eden Geothermal Ltd consists of three partners: Eden Project, EGS Energy Ltd and Bestec (UK) Ltd and was funded by the ERDF, Cornwall Council and institutional investors.
