Carboxylic acids are key substrates in various industries such as pharmaceuticals, food, textiles, fertilizers, polymers, coatings, etc. Their production predominantly relies on petrochemical feedstocks and often requires high pressure and temperature, resulting in chemicals with high carbon footprints. For instance, acetic acid has a footprint of 1.6 kg CO2eq per Kg of acid, with more complex hydrocarbon moieties drastically increasing the footprint.
EvoCarbon by Eutechtics is a catalytic process that transforms carbon dioxide into “ultra-low” carboxylic acids enabled by a new generation of bio-derived materials known as deep eutectic solvents (DES). EvoCarbon leverages some of DES unique properties such as good CO2 solubility, intrinsic ionic conductivity, tuneable polarity, low vapour pressure, biodegradability, low toxicity, and affordability.
